Michael A. Munoz, District Ranger, Rocky Mountain Ranger District (RMRD), Helena – Lewis and Clark National Forest (HLF), Northern Region (R1), USDA Forest Service.

Michael Munoz is a 40-year veteran of the USDA FS.  On the first day of summer in 2024, he will have served 25 years as the District Ranger on the expansive RMRD of the HLF.  In prior years, Mike worked in the Great Northern Plains of the Custer NF (Ashland, Montana); the Colorado Plateau of the Coconino NF (Flagstaff, Arizona); the Rocky Mountains of the Beaverhead NF (Dillon, Montana); and the Basin and Range country of the Toiyabe NF (Bridgeport, California).

Mike graduated from Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt) with a Bachelor of Science in Rangeland Management and a Minor in Soil Science; previously graduating from Mount San Antonio College with an Associate of Arts in Forestry Management.

Although Mike’s fire-line qualifications as division group supervisor have long since lapsed, he remains active in fire management as an Advanced Agency Administrator; and especially enjoys the aspects of managing wildland fire and prescribed fire for the benefit of the landscape and water.  The job of ‘Rangering’ remains the best job he has experienced, offering the opportunity to engage people and influence others in how we relate to and serve as stewards in Caring for the Land.  Having the privilege of serving as a CMP Steering Committee member has allowed influence at an even larger landscape scale.
